@BamaStateMBB looks to get back on track against Southern

Hornets defeated Southern earlier this season in Montgomery

BATON ROUGE, La. | Alabama State looks to get back on track after an overtime loss Saturday, facing Southern Monday night in a key Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) matchup on the road.

Tip is set for 7:30 pm inside the F.G. Clark Activity Center, and can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network with the pregame show beginning 15 minutes prior to tip.

Alabama State (10-14, 8-5 SWAC) finds itself in third place in the conference, two games behind Texas Southern and percentage points ahead of UAPB in fourth. The Hornets are two games clear of Grambling State and Jackson State in fifth, with five games remaining in the regular season.

Inside the Alabama State Hornets
  • Alabama State played their second overtime game of the season on the road, dropping their first overtime contest of the season to Alcorn State. In that contest, Alabama State had the lead late before falling and were led by Jacoby Ross with 21 points.
  • The Hornets had three players in double figures against Alcorn State, with Reginald Gee chipping in 16 and Leon Daniels 11 off the bench. Tobi Ewuosho pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds, while Kevin Holston dished out a team-high four assists.
  • Alabama State is looking for their third series sweep of the season after finishing off sweeps of Alabama A&M and Mississippi Valley State earlier this month. The Hornets have split the season series with Alcorn State following the overtime loss.
  • Gee leads Alabama State in scoring this season at 14.4 points per game, and is currently fourth in the conference in scoring; while Ross is second on the team (13.6 points per game) and is fifth in the conference in the same category.
  • The last time Alabama State and Southern met back in Montgomery, the Jags took an early 17-point advantage over Alabama State before the Hornets raced back for a 69-65 victory. AJ Farrar posted a double-double in the win off the bench with 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Inside the Southern Jaguars
  • Southern enters the contest after a win over Alabama A&M Saturday night, and are currently sitting ninth in the conference standings – one game ahead of Mississippi Valley State.
  • Sidney Umude leads Southern in scoring, and is currently 12th in the conference this season at 12.2 points per game – sitting just outside the top 10. Meanwhile, Jayden Saddler is 22nd in the conference in scoring at 9.5 points per game.
  • Umude is also 12th in the conference in rebounding at 5.2 rebounds per game, while Saddler is fifth in the conference in assists at 3.7 assist per game.

Inside the Series
  • Alabama State leads the all-time series 48-32, however, Southern has controlled the series in the last nine games.
  • The Jags have won six of the last nine games, including sweeping the season series last year by a combined six points. Southern won in Baton Rouge 63-61, before winning Montgomery 71-67 to complete the sweep.
  • The Hornets won the first meeting this season, defeating Southern 69-65 after falling behind by 15 early in the contest.

What's Next
  • Alabama State returns home for their final two regular season games at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome beginning Saturday.
  • The Hornets face Texas Southern Saturday evening, before facing Prairie View A&M on ESPNU Monday night at 8 pm inside the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
