PINE BLUFF Ark. | UAPB scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Alabama State 7-6 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action Friday afternoon.
The two teams traded big innings midway through the contest with UAPB putting four on the board in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-1 lead, before Alabama State answered with four of their own in the top half of the fourth inning. The Lady Hornets used a two-run single by
Charlene Castro to plate
Alexis Sydnor and
Kristin Gunter to trim the deficit to 4-3.
Alabama State (12-12, 3-1 SWAC) took the lead at 5-4 when
Amira James connected on a two-run single to center, before UAPB answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fourth inning to tie the game at 5-all.
The Lady Hornets would take the lead again in the fifth when Gunter connected on a solo home run to left to put Alabama State up 6-5. The score would stay that way until the bottom half of the seventh inning when Desiree Bumpers connected for a two-run double to give the Lady Lions the walk-off win.
Gunter led Alabama State at the plate, finishing the day 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, while Castro also finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
Alexis Massie finished 2-for-3 on the day with a run scored.
Justine Jean suffered the loss for Alabama State, working 6.1 innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits.
Alabama State and UAPB (1-20, 1-3 SWAC) will meet in a doubleheader Saturday beginning at 1 pm to close out the conference series.
