MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State advanced in the winner's bracket of the 2019 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Softball Tournament with a 10-1 victory over Southern Wednesday morning.
Alabama State (21-22) jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning before Southern (9-24) was able to get on the board in the top of the third. Alabama State wasted little time as
Alexis Sydnor singled through the left side to bring in
Casey Durham;
Kristin Gunter continued the scoring efforts with a RBI double that plated Sydnor and
Kaylee Davis.
The Lady Hornets extended the lead to 4-0 on a sacrifice fly by
Hailey Walker, before an
Alexis Massie single scored
Charlene Castro to push the lead to 5-0. Southern scored their only run in the game when Adriana Rincon singled to left center to score Aubrion James in the third inning.
Alabama State added five more runs in the fourth inning, including a two-run single by Sydnor and a two-run double by Gunter.
Sydnor and Gunter were 2-for-3, while five Lady Hornets finished with a hit each in the game.
Justine Jean picked up the win with 5.0 innings of work, allowing three hits, a single run and five strikeouts.
Alabama State will face the winner of Texas Southern-Jackson State Thursday afternoon at 3 pm.
