@BamaStateMBB hits the road to face Southern, Alcorn State this weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State continues their three-game Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) road swing with games against Southern and Alcorn State beginning Saturday in Baton Rouge.

The Hornets, who have won two of their last three conference games, will face Southern (6-13, 3-3 SWAC) Saturday evening with the game carried by the Southern Radio Network; before facing Alcorn State (8-9, 4-2 SWAC) Monday night at 7:30 pm on the Hornet Sports Network.

Alabama State (3-15, 2-3 SWAC) enters the game fresh off a 65-56 victory over Alabama A&M this past weekend in Birmingham (Ala.), giving them two victories in their last three conference games. They had four players in double figures led by Tobi Ewuosho with 14 points and seven rebounds. The Hornets split the road trip last year coming from behind to defeat Southern, before dropping an overtime contest to Alcorn State.

#What to Watch For
Ewuosho continues to lead Alabama State in both scoring and rebounding heading into the fourth week of conference play. The senior, a two-time SWAC Player of the Week award winner, is averaging 14.6 points and 6.2 rebounds per game this season. He has also scored in double figures in 15 of the 18 games the Hornets have played in 2019-20.

Both Leon Daniels and Brandon Battle are averaging 7.9 points per game with each providing a spark for the Hornets. Battle has scored in double figures in five straight games, while Daniels poured in 20 in a win over Mississippi Valley State.

In conference play, a pair of Hornets – Ewuosho and Daniels – are averaging in double figures with Ewuosho leading the way at 15.6 points and 6.4 rebounds. Daniels, meanwhile, is averaging 11.2 points and 6.0 rebounds in conference play. Battle is also in double figures in conference play, averaging 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.

Meanwhile, DJ Heath is averaging 7.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game from his point guard position in conference play.

#Scouting Southern
Southern is led by Ahsante Shivers at 9.2 points this season per game, starting 15 of the 17 games for the Jags. Meanwhile, Damiree Burns is averaging 9.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 19 games mostly off the bench for Southern.

The Jags enter the contest off a 74-70 victory over Mississippi Valley State on the road, their third consecutive conference victory of the season.

#Scouting Alcorn State
Alcorn State enters the weekend on a three-game winning streak following an 82-54 road victory over UAPB. They have also defeated Mississippi Valley State and Grambling State in their latest run.

The Braves currently lead the conference in scoring at 79.2 points per game, with four players in double figures led by Maurice Howard at 16.1 points per game. Deshaw Andrews and Corey Tillery each average 13.2 points per game, while Troymain Crosby is at 13.1 points per game through 17 contests.
