ATHENS, Ga. | No. 14 Georgia benefitted from six unearned runs to come away with a 9-1 win over Alabama State in mid-week action at Jack Turner Stadium Tuesday night.
The Lady Hornets (6-9) struck first in the top of the first after
Kindall DeRamus led off with a walk,
Alexis Sydnor moved her into scoring position with a single and
Alexis Massie singled her in for the early lead. The 14th-ranked Bulldogs (15-3) wasted no time striking back, scoring on a throwing error in the bottom of the first.
A five-run third proved to be the turning point in the contest for Georgia. In a 2-1 ballgame,
Justine Jean (1-2) seemed to have escaped the inning with a two-out strikeout, but the runner was able to beat the throw to keep the inning alive – the Bulldogs scored four more in the frame after that.
Jean suffered the hard-luck loss for Alabama State despite an effective start in the circle, striking out six batters and allowing just three hits – all six runs scored on the senior were unearned. UGA's Lauren Mathis improved to 6-0 on the year after fanning 11 batters through five innings of work.
Offensively, the Lady Hornets were led by Sydnor – the reigning SWAC Player of the Week. The senior went 2-for-2 with a walk to improve her season batting average to .528. Massie's first-inning, RBI single was the only other hit ASU was able to scratch off Mathis.
