MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Fresh off a pair of victories at home this past week, Alabama State looks to keep the momentum in their favor hitting the road for a pair of games beginning Saturday afternoon.
Alabama State (5-17, 4-5 SWAC) looks to extend their modest two-game winning streak as they face Mississippi Valley State Saturday afternoon at 4 pm, before heading to the state of Arkansas to face UAPB Monday night at 7:30 pm. Both games will be carried by the Hornet Sports Network, beginning with pregame 15 minutes prior to tip.
The Hornets find themselves just one game back of fifth place Jackson State and Grambling State, and just two games back of Southern and Alcorn State heading into the weekend. The games this weekend mark the official beginning of the second half of the season in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).
#What to Watch For
Alabama State won back-to-back games for the first time this season last week, ending a six-game losing streak to Prairie View A&M and a 13-game streak to Texas Southern. The Hornets have won two games away from home this season, including one in conference play against Alabama A&M.
The Hornets split the meetings earlier this season with Mississippi Valley State and UAPB at home, including a win over the Delta Devils.
Tobi Ewuosho leads Alabama State in scoring and rebounding at 14.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, while he is also averaging 14.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in conference play. While he is the lone player in double figures on the season in scoring,
Leon Daniels is averaging 8.8 overall this season and 11.9 points per game in conference play.
#Scouting MVSU
Michael Green leads the Delta Devils in scoring at 17.1 points per game on the season, leading three players averaging double figures on the year for MVSU. Meanwhile, Caleb Hunter averages 13.9 and Torico Simmons 10 on the year for the Delta Devils.
The trio has attempted 996 field goals on the year, while Green has hit 40 (143-of-356) percent of his shots on the season. Hunter has attempted 187 total three-pointers on the year, 76 more than the next closest Delta Devil.
#Scouting UAPB
Shaun Doss leads a pair of Golden Lions in double figures at just over 12 points per game on the season, while Markedric Bell is averaging over 10.
UAPB has five players who have attempted 100 or more field goals, led by Bell with 188 and Marquell Carter with 176. Â
#The First Meeting vs. MVSU
In the first meeting with Mississippi Valley State this season, the Hornets grabbed an 81-75 victory over the Delta Devils led by Daniels with 20 points and eight rebounds. Meanwhile, Ewuosho added 16 points and seven rebounds, while
Jacoby Ross added 11 and
Decardo Day 10.
Simmons led Mississippi Valley State with 26 points, while Hunter added 20. Jordan Lyons chipped in 10 points.
#The First Meeting vs. UAPB
The Golden Lions defeated Alabama State 61-56, led by Carter with 19 points and Dequan Morris with 10. Meanwhile, Ewuosho led Alabama State with 19 points and
DJ Heath added 11.
