HOUSTON, Texas | Despite a career night from
Tyrese Robinson, Alabama State fell late to Texas Southern 78-73 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action Monday night at the Health and Physical Education Arena.
Robinson finished with 15 points and seven rebounds for Alabama State (8-21, 7-9 SWAC), while
Jacoby Ross added 12 – including his 900th career point.
AJ Farrar added 10 rebounds, and
DJ Heath seven assists for the Hornets who finished the night shooting 41.0 (25-of-61) percent from the floor and just 20.8 (5-of-24) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 72.0 (18-of-25) percent from the free throw line.
Alabama State led most of the game until an 8-0 run by Texas Southern gave them the lead midway through the second half, however, the Hornets battled back and tied things up at 69-all with 1:54 to play. However, after a three-pointer by Bryson Etienne gave Texas Southern a 72-69 lead, the Hornets couldn't get any closer than three – including on a
Tobi Ewuosho jumper with just nine seconds left to pull them to within 76-73. Texas Southern (15-14, 12-4 SWAC) was able to put the game away with free throws late.
The two teams split the season series with Alabama State winning at home (79-55) back in early February.
Meanwhile, Tyrik Armstrong led Texas Southern with 21 points as the Tigers finished the night shooting 40.4 (23-of-57) percent from the floor and 20.0 (3-of-15) percent from beyond the arc. They also finished the night shooting 72.5 (29-of-40) from the free throw line.
Alabama State returns to action at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Thursday night, hosting Jackson State. The game tips at 7:30 pm and will be carried by the Hornet Sports Network
