MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State returns home for a pair of games this week at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome beginning Saturday afternoon against Alcorn State.
The Lady Hornets tip off at 2 pm against Alcorn State and will face Southern on Monday at 5:30 pm. Both games will be carried by the Hornet Sports Network.
Alabama State (3-0, 3-0 SWAC) has not seen the court since a 69-45 victory over Mississippi Valley State on January 12. The Lady Hornets are off to their best start in conference play since they won their first three conference games back in 2009.
Ayana Emmanuel leads three players in double figures at 19.0 points per game, including a season-high 29 points against UAPB. She is shooting 50.0 (18-for-36) percent from the floor and has connected on three three-pointers this season.
Jayla Crawford is averaging 16.7 points per game while shooting 42.4 (14-for-33) percent from the floor and 94.4 (17-for-18) percent from the free throw line.
Shmya Ward, who missed all of last season, is averaging a near double-double at 14.7 points and 9.3 rebounds per game for Alabama State. She has recorded a pair of double-doubles this season, with one each against Jackson State and UAPB.
Meanwhile, Alcorn State (4-5, 4-1 SWAC) comes into the weekend on a three-game winning streak after back-to-back wins at home. The Lady Braves are led by Kirdis Clark at 11.9 points per game. She is shooting 36.8 (39-for-106) percent from the floor and 70.8 (17-for-24) percent from the free throw line.
Southern (3-8, 3-2 SWAC) has won back-to-back games entering Monday and will have an extra day off with their contest Saturday against Alabama A&M postponed. Genovea Johnson leads Southern, averaging 14.6 points per game through eight games this season.
