MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State looks to bounce back from a tough home loss Saturday night, hosting Southern at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Monday night.
Tip is set for 8 pm, and the game can be seen on the Hornet Sports Network.
In their last game, Alabama State (1-5, 1-5 SWAC) trailed by as many as 21 points in the second before outscoring Alcorn State 32-10 over the final 16 minutes to take a two-point lead before the Braves knocked down four free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.
Brandon Battle recorded his second consecutive double-double, scoring a career-high 17 points to go along with ten rebounds in the loss.
For the year,
Kenny Strawbridge leads the Hornets in scoring at 11.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, while Battle is averaging 10.3 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
Jordan O'Neal, who grabbed ten rebounds in the loss Saturday, is averaging 4.8 rebounds and leads the team in blocks, while
DJ Heath leads the team in assists at 2.2 per game.
The game features an Alabama State defense currently second in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) at 65.8 points allowed per contest, against a Southern team that is currently the third-highest scoring team in the conference at 69.1 points per game. The Jags also lead the conference in three-point shooting at 33.6 percent and enter the game having its three-game winning streak ended by Alabama A&M on Saturday.
The Hornets lead the all-time series with Southern 44-38; however, the Jags have won the last three meetings (all last year). Alabama State leads the series in Montgomery 16-10 overall.
