MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State will hit the road for its first stretch away from home in the 2021 season this weekend, as the Lady Hornets travel to UAPB Saturday and Mississippi Valley State Monday in SWAC action.
The Lady Hornets (1-0, 1-0 SWAC) have a world of momentum on their side after starting their season with a huge win over defending conference champ Jackson State at the Acadome this past Monday.
Junior guard
Jayla Crawford led the way offensively with 18 points and was one of four players who scored in double figures in the contest. Crawford was joined by
Ayana Emmanuel, freshman
Farrah Pearson and
Shmya Ward – who tallied a double-double on the night.
The win in the conference opener was the first for Alabama State since defeating Grambling State on January 3, 2015. The Lady Hornets finished that season by winning the SWAC Tournament and advancing to face Florida State in the NCAA Tournament.
SCOUTING UAPB
UAPB (2-5, 1-0 SWAC) brings a little momentum into this weekend's contests after a big win of their own last weekend. The Golden Lady Lions tipped-off their conference slate with a 15-point win against Mississippi Valley State last Saturday in Pine Bluff. They're led offensively by a trio of players that average double digits – Joyce Kennerson (14.0 ppg), Kaila Walker (13.0 ppg) and Khadijah Brown (13.0 ppg).
SCOUTING MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE
Despite losing their SWAC opener last Saturday, the Devilettes (2-3, 0-1 SWAC) have started their 2020-2021 season strong – winning a couple of non-conference games at ULM and Northwestern State. Valley boasts a pair of double-digit scorers in Annya Moss (13.0 ppg) and Zakiya Mahoney – who nearly averages a double-double at 15.0 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest.
