Alabama State falls in final game of calendar year, begin conference play on January 3

NASHVILLE, Tenn. | Alabama State (2-8) dropped its final non-conference contest of the season, falling to Vanderbilt 94-42 inside of Memorial Gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

After guard Tyesha Rudolph (Evergreen, Ala.) scored the first basket of the game at the nine-minute mark, both teams struggled to find their offense early on; however, after a timeout Vanderbilt started a 15-4 run to gain some separation.

Minutes later, Hornet guard Kailya Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.) scored back-to-back baskets to cut into the lead at 22-11 with just over a minute to go in the opening quarter, however the Commodores sank two threes after a timeout to end the first leading 28-11.

Vanderbilt continued to extend their lead on the shorthanded Alabama State squad in the second and held the Hornets to just 42 points in the game.

Jada Nneji (Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada) led the Hornets with 11 points and grabbed three rebounds, while Jackson added eight points and five rebounds on the evening.

The Hornets finished the game shooting 34 (17-of-50) percent from the floor, 16.7 (2-of-12) percent from three and just 37.5 (6-of-16) percent from the free throw line.

Iyana Moore led three Commodore scorers in double figures with 32 points, including 9-of-12 from deep, while Brinae Alexander added 20 and Demi Washington finished with 10 points.
