Alabama State opens final home series with a win over Mississippi Valley State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. I Alabama State (10-24, 5-5 SWAC) used eight runs in the second inning to defeat Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) opponent Mississippi Valley State 9-7 at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex on Thursday afternoon.

After a scoreless first inning, Mississippi Valley scored the first run in the second after a bases loaded walk and added four more before the close of the inning on a grand slam to go up 5-0.

The Hornets opened their scoring on an RBI double from Kaley Anthony and later added to their score after a hit from Destinee Dixon and a throwing error to allow two runners to cross the plate. After a drawn walk by Jamaica Flowers, Elizabeth Williams got on base on another error to bring in Dixon and the Hornets scored again after Madison Myers drove in Flowers for the tying run.

Alabama State continued their rally in the inning, with Jaeda Gardner reaching on an infield single to score pinch runner Lauryn Maher, and added two more runs on groundouts to take an 8-5 lead heading into the third.

Mississippi Valley responded with a run in top of fifth inning, however the Hornets matched the run in the bottom of the sixth to maintain their three run lead.

The Delta Devils scored once more in the final inning, however failed to complete the comeback as the Hornets came away with the 9-7 victory.

Alabama State pounded out six hits on the afternoon, while Skyler Sullivan (10-8) pitched a complete game once again for the Hornets, allowing seven runs off of 11 hits and striking out two in the win.

The two teams will return to the field on Friday for a doubleheader at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex to wrap up the three-game series.

Due to COVID-19 protocols, only those listed on the Player Pass List will be allowed entry into the Barbara Williams Softball Complex. All concessions will be cashless throughout the season and the Alabama State University campus – including its athletic venues – are mask mandatory.
