Alabama State closes out three-game homestand with win over rival Alabama A&M

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State extended their win streak on Saturday afternoon with a 74-69 win over rival Alabama A&M inside the Dunn-Oliver Acadome in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game.
 
In a game of runs, both teams started off slow offensively, shooting under 40 percent from the field in the first quarter. The Bulldogs led 15-13 after one, while Shmya Ward (Memphis, Tenn.) had a good start for the Hornets with six early points.
 
Alabama State responded in the second quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 19-11 in the frame, and never trailed again in the ball game. The Hornets extended their lead to game-high 15 points in the third quarter, however the Bulldogs climbed back into the ball game with big fourth reducing the lead to single digits before the Hornets took the win.
 
Alabama State finished the game shooting 40.7 (24-of-59) percent from the floor, 42.9 (6-of-14) percent from three and 71.4 (20-of-28) percent from the free throw line. Their opposition shot just 33.8 (23-of-68) percent from the field and 20 (2-of-10) percent from three and turned the ball over 16 times, resulting in 19 points off turnovers for the Hornets.
 
Tyesha Rudolph (Evergreen, Ala.) led the Hornets on the day with 20 points along with three assists, two steals and two rebounds. Meanwhile, Ward finished with 16 points and six rebounds, followed by Ayana Emmanuel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) who finished with 12 points and three assists in the win.
 
The Bulldogs finished with three scorers in double figures, led by Nigeria Jones with 20 points, followed by Dariauna Lewis and Zhordan Shannon with 16 points and 10 points respectively.
 
UP NEXT
Alabama State will travel to Texas next weekend as they take on Prairie View A&M on January 22 at 3 pm and Texas Southern on January 24 at 5:30 pm.
