Alabama State travels for annual Texas trip, starting with a battle with Prairie View A&M

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas | Alabama State will head to Texas for a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) road contest against Prairie View A&M inside of the Williams Nicks Building on Saturday afternoon at 3 pm.
 
Alabama State (5-9, 4-1 SWAC) currently leads the all-time series between the two programs 48-32 and is 19-18 in Prairie View. The Hornets are coming off winning two of three home games, while the Panthers are coming off a road win over Alcorn State on Monday.

GAME NOTES
  • Alabama State is aiming to win their third straight conference game, after defeating Alcorn State 74-39 on January 10 and rival Alabama A&M 74-69 on January 15.
  • The Hornets are currently tied for second in the SWAC standings, tied at 4-1 with Southern and just one game behind Jackson State. Both teams were predicted to finish first and second respectively in the preseason polls.
  • All-SWAC performers Ayana Emmanuel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Shmya Ward (Memphis, Tenn.) both had good stretches last week with double digit scoring in all three games for Alabama State. Ward led the Hornets averaging 16 points per contest, while Emmanuel averaged 14.3 points over that span.
  • Head Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson is 25-26 against Prairie View A&M during her tenure, dating back to the 1998-99 season, her first season leading the program.
  • Saturday's game is the only matchup scheduled between the two programs this season, going away from playing every conference member twice due to additional members this calendar year.
