Hornets fall in tight road battle at Texas Southern

HOUSTON, Texas | Alabama State dropped their second consecutive road game as they fell to Texas Southern on Monday evening 67-64 inside the H&PE Arena in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) game.
 
After an even first quarter, Alabama State (5-11, 4-3 SWAC) started the second quarter with a 6-0 run to go up 19-13 with just over eight minutes to play in the half and extended their lead to ten at 25-15 for the first time after a three from Hannah White (Columbus, Miss.) at the 5:33 mark.
 
The Hornets maintained their lead over the remainder of the half, heading into the locker room up 32-25 and holding the Tigers to just 37 percent shooting from the field and 16.7 percent from deep through two quarters.
 
Texas Southern began to chip away at the Alabama State lead midway through the third quarter and cut the lead to five points at 39-34 moments later; however, the Hornets remained in control of the game, leading the rest of the third and led going into the final ten minutes of play.
 
In a frantic fourth quarter, the two teams battled for the lead as the Hornets led by as many as seven points at 57-50 yet surrendered the lead with just over four minutes to play. Texas Southern forced nine turnovers in the quarter as the game was tied on three different occasions in the quarter.
 
With the score tied at 64-64 at the 1:49 mark, Texas Southern scored inside on their next possession to take the final lead of the game, outscoring the Hornets 20-14 in the quarter to take the win.
 
Alabama State shot 41.4 (24-of-58) percent from the floor, 30 (3-of-10) percent from three and 72.2 (13-of-18) percent from the free throw line in the game, while Texas Southern shot 37.1 (23-of-62) percent from the field, 21.1 (4-of-19) percent from three and 53.1 (17-of-32) percent from the free throw line.
 
Jayla Crawford led three Hornets in double figures on the evening with 17 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists, while Ayana Emmanuel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Shmya Ward (Memphis, Tenn.) finished with 14 and 12 respectively. Emmanuel also recorded five rebounds, while Ward added seven rebounds and three assists to her night.
 
Atiya Bridges and Adriana Avent led Texas Southern with 15 points each, while Shalexxus Aaron added 12 points on the day.

UP NEXT
Alabama State returns to the friendly confines of the Dunn-Oliver Acadome next weekend as they host Bethune-Cookman on Saturday, January 29. Tip-off is set for 12 pm and will be the only game of the day as the men's program will take on the Wildcats in Mobile.
