BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | The Alabama State University women's basketball team is picked fifth in the Southwestern Athletic Confernece Women's Basketball Preseason Poll announced on Tuesday. 

Alabama State totaled 190 points behind top pick Jackson State (267/11 first place votes), defending tournament champion Southern University (245/5 first place votes), Arkansas-Pine Bluff (216/four first place votes) and rival Alabama A&M (200). 

Prairie View A&M is sixth followed by Bethune-Cookman (144), Grambling State (128), Alcorn State (119), Texas Southern (66) and Mississippi Valley State (44). 

Alabama State hosts and exhibition game against Shorter University on November 2 at 6;30 p.m. before opening the regular season at the University of Alabama on Nov. 7.
