Alabama State falls to Alabama In Season Opener

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. | The Alabama State women's basketball team got a 12-point performance from the bench, but fell 93-39 to the Alabama Crimson Tide on the Monday at Coleman Coliseum.

Shmya Ward led the Hornets (0-1) with 13 points, four assists and two blocks. Cordasia Harris tacked on seven points and Whitney Dunn chipped in as well with five points.

Alabama State did a great job disrupting Alabama shots in the contest, coming away with seven blocks. Ward's two rejections led the way individually for the Hornets.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Alabama State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 28-10 at the end of the first quarter.

The Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 45-16 halftime deficit.

Alabama continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 47-17 advantage before Alabama State went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 47-22 with 8:21 to go in the third. Alabama countered and stretched its lead to 65-30 heading into the fourth.

Alabama State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 93-39. Alabama State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its nine points in the paint.
