Alabama State Notes
- The Hornets defeated LaGrange 90-69 in an exhibition contest on Monday, Oct. 30, playing 13 players in the process, before playing just nine against Ole Miss in the regular season opener on Nov. 6.
- TJ Madlock and CJ Hines paced three players in double figures against Ole Miss with 12, while Amarr Knox added 11 off the bench. Jasteven Walker knocked a team-high three three-pointers off the bench.
- Madlock was named preseason Second Team All-Conference after earning the 2022-23 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Newcomer of the Year. He averaged 11.2 points and 6.1 rebounds per game last season.
- Isaiah Range returned after missing the last eight games of the season following a season-ending injury. Before he was injured, Range led Alabama State in scoring at 14.2 points per game. He played against LaGrange before sitting out against Ole Miss.
- Range is the only player who has seen action in the past against Iowa, playing against the Hawkeyes in 2021.
- Alabama State returns 46.2 percent of its scoring from last season, and 38.9 percent of its rebounding from a season ago.
Iowa Notes
- Iowa has won 84 of its last 90 nonconference home games, dating back to 2012. Hawkeyes' Fran McCaffery is 10 wins from becoming the winningest coach in Iowa basketball history. Tom Davis has 272 victories as Iowa's head coach.
- The Hawkeyes return two starters and eight letterwinners from a team that won 19 games, finished fifth in the Big Ten standings, and advanced to its fourth straight NCAA Tournament. Iowa added eight newcomers to the roster, including Valparaiso transfer Ben Krikke and Belmont transfer Even Brauns.
- Seniors Patrick McCaffery (47) and Tony Perkins (48) have combined to start 95 games (and play in 186 games) in their collegiate careers. Perkins is Iowa's top returning scorer at 12.3 points per game.
- Mr. Basketball x 2. Two of Iowa's incoming freshmen — Brock Harding and Pryce Sandfort — were named Mr. Basketball in their home states. Harding earned the distinction in Illinois; and Sandfort in Iowa.
- Alabama State is 32-99 in games where opponents score 100-plus points in the history of the program. However, two of the last four performances by an opponent in which they have scored 100-plus points have come on the road in Iowa City where the Hawkeyes won 105-78 (11/21/18) and 108-62 (11/18/21), the last time an opponent scored 100 points in a game against Alabama State. The last time the Hornets scored 100-plus points in a game came last year when they defeated Huntingdon 101-46 (10/31/22), snapping a seven-year drought of scoring 100-plus points.
