Hornets hit the road to face LSU on Wednesday, first game in 10 days

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State hits the floor on Wednesday night after its longest break of the season, facing LSU at the Maravich Assembly Center.
 
Alabama State (4-4) has not played since Dec. 3 when it defeated MUW at home by 20 and has won three consecutive games entering the matchup at 7 pm on the SEC Network+. The meeting will be the first between the Hornets and LSU (5-4) in school history.
 
TJ Madlock leads three Alabama State players in double figures at 15.9 points per game and has been the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Player of the Week two times this season. He is joined by CJ Hines at 12.4 points and 4.1 assists per game, while Isaiah Range is averaging 11.3 points per game in his first four games of the season after returning from a season-ending injury last season.

Alabama State Notes
  • Kendal Parker turned in another career performance in a second consecutive game. Just one week after scoring a career-high 12 points against Merrimack, he followed that up with an 18-point performance against MUW at home on Dec. 3.
  • Tonight's game marks the second game against an SEC foe for Alabama State this year, falling to Ole Miss 69-59 [11/6]. They will face Auburn (12/22] to round out its SEC schedule, In between the two games against SEC foes, the Hornets will host USC at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Dec. 19.
  • Range and Madlock are closing in on career milestones during the 2023-24 season, as both draw closer to 1,000 career points. Through four games this season, Range has scored 917 career points, averaging 11.1 points per game through his career. Meanwhile, Madlock has scored 870 points through eight games this season. Both players should hit the mark at their current rates, with Madlock averaging 12.4 points per game for his career and 16.0 thus far this season.
  • Alabama State will have its longest break of the season after the game on Sunday, as it will be off for 10 days before taking the court again, on the road against LSU on Dec. 13. That game starts a string of four consecutive games on air with two on SEC Network+ and another two on ESPN+.
  • Hines is among the nation's best in assist/turnover ratio ranking second overall through the first eight games of the season at 5.50. He ranks at the top of the conference while the nation's leader, Dastone Brown [Utah State] is at 7.27. He also ranks fourth in the conference and 221st in the nation in assists [33].
  • Madlock has his name show up eight different times in the NCAA Statistical rankings, including at 65 in steals per game at 2.00.
  • Alabama State ranks among the nation's best in several categories including fastbreak points [eighth], rebounds per game [11th], offensive rebounds per game [11th], defensive rebounds per game [37th], and bench points per game [41st]. The Hornets have led all of those categories in the majority of their games this season.
LSU Notes
  • The game against Alabama State will be the second game this year against a SWAC school for the Tigers who defeated Mississippi Valley State 106-60 in the season-opener.
  • Will Baker and Jordan Wright are the only two Tigers in double figures this season with Baker leading the way at 14.1 points and 5.3 rebounds per game. Wright is averaging 13.2 points and 4.9 rebounds per game through the first nine games (eight starts).
  • Jalen Reed is averaging 9.9 points per game while shooting 57.1 (32-of-56) percent from the floor.
  • Wright is tied for the team lead in assists with Trae Hannibal at 16.
  • The Tigers are currently 17th in the nation in steals, 44th in field goal percentage defense, 59th in free attempts per game, and 62nd in free throws made per game,
