@BamaStateSB Downs Southern, South Carolina State On Saturday

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama State University women's softball scored 14 runs and pounded out 19 hits to defeat Southern University and South Carolina State University on Saturday at the HBCU Celebration Classic.

 HOW IT HAPPENED - SU
  • Alabama State scored a run in the first and second innings and added three in the third to build a 5-0 lead. 
  • Brooke Ramsey and Elizabeth Williams got runs home on sac flies in the first and second innings. 
  • The Lady Hornets scored three on two hits and took advantage of three Southern errors in the three-run third. 
  • Alabama State ended the game due to the NCAA mercy rule with a three-run fifth. Williams drove in two runs and Leah Richardson scored on a Jaeda Gardner sac-fly.
IN THE CIRCLE – SU
  • Ashley Pye (1-1) picked up the win, tossing a one-hit shutout with pair of strikeouts. 
  • Julie York (0-1) gave up five runs on four hits with two strikeouts to take the loss for Southern. 
INSIDE THE BOX -SU
  • Williams finished 2-for-2 with three RBI at the plate for the Lady Hornets. 
  • The win was the fourth straight for Alabama State.
  • Pye recorded her first career shutout in the circle for the Lady Hornets.
  • Alabama State had eight hits and drew six walks. 
 HOW IT HAPPENED - SCSU
  • The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead on an RBI double. 
  • Alabama State tied the game in the bottom of the first on an Alex Denby double down the right field line. 
  • Two runs scored in the third and one run came across in the fourth to give the Lady Hornets a 4-1 lead. 
  • Parrish and Williams had RBI singles in the third and a run scored on a Kindall DeRamus groundout in the fourth. 
  • Destiny Calloway hit her second home of the tournament to cut ASU's lead to 4-3 in the fifth. 
  • Alabama State added a run in the fifth on a Gardner sac-fly in the bottom and a Preston groundout RBI in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead. 
IN THE CIRCLE – SCSU
  • Olivia Brown (2-1) earned the win in the circle for Alabama State, tossing 2.2 innings and allowing two runs on five hits with a strikeout. 
  • Greenlee (1) worked 2.1 scoreless innings to pick up the save. 
  • DeAsia Lowthler (0-2) allowed six runs, five earned on 11 hits with two strikeouts to take the loss for SCSU. 
INSIDE THE BOX -SCSU
  • Madison Myers was 4-for-4 with two runs scored. 
  • Alex Denby was 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
