@BamaStateSB Drops Final Two Games at Capital City Classsic

SACRAMENTO, Calif. | The Alabama State University softball put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position but dropped the nightcap 2-1 to Sacramento State on Saturday at the 2023 Capital Classic. Alabama State dropped a 9-5 decision to Southern Utah in game one of the day.

 HOW IT HAPPENED | Southern Utah
  • Southern Utah put up a three-run second to take a 3-0 lead. 
  • Alabama State answered with two runs in the bottom of the second. Jaeda Rogers had an RBI I single and a run scored when Kindal DeRamus reached on an error.
  • Madison Sanders put Southern Utah ahead 4-2 with an RBI single to left in the third inning.
  • JaNiyah Boykin and Alexia Denby delivered RBI singles in the third and fourth innings to tie the game 4-4.
  • Emily Gonzalez hit a three-run homer as par to a four-run fifth inning and a solo home run in the sixth to put Southern Utah 9-4.
  • The Lady Hornets loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but only scored once on a Jaeda Gardner RBI single.

  • Ashley Pye (2-2) gave up eight runs, six earned, on eight hits with a walk as the pitcher of record for the Lady Hornets.
  • Keimon Winston (2-2) earned the win, allowing two runs on four hits with four strikeouts over 4.0 innings in the circle.

  • Denby went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Alexia Preston had two hits, including a double.
  • Boykin finished 2-for-3 with an RBI.

  • Katie Marsh doubled home a run in the second to give Sacramento State a 1-0 lead. 
  • Preston had an RBI double to tie the game 1-1 in the top sixth.
  • Sacramento State regained a 2-1 lead on a Nikki Barboza sac-fly in the bottom of the sixth. 
  • Alabama State put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the top of the seventh before a strikeout ended the game.

  • Bailey Greenlee (5-4) gave up one run on two hits to take the loss for the Lady Hornets. 
  • Marissa Bertuccio (6-3) struck out 10 while giving up one run on two hits to earn the win for Sacramento State.

  • Preston, Denby, Ramsey, and Parrish collected hits for Alabama State.
  • Preston drove in the lone run with a double.
