Ward's Double-Double Sends Lady Hornets Past Bethune-Cookman

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Shmya Ward's fourth double-double helped Alabama State University advance past Bethune-Cookman University, 70-61, in the quarterfinals of the Cricket Wireless SWAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Thursday. 

Ward scored 20 points and collected 11 rebounds to lead three Lady Hornets in double figures. Jayla Crawford followed with 16 points and Cordasia Harris chipped in 10 points.    

Alabama State advances to the SWAC Tournament semifinals for the second straight year to take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The Golden Lions upset No. 2 Alabama A&M on Wednesday.

 HOW IT HAPPENED  
  • A Morgan Beecham 3-point play gave the Wildcats an early 7-2 lead just over 3:00 into the first quarter. 
  • Jayla Crawford sank two free throws to close the gap to 7-4 at th3 4:58 mark. 
  • Crawford hit a 3-pointer to tie the game 10-10 with 2:33 to go in the first quarter.  
  • A Christian Jackson elbow jump cut the Bethune-Cookman lead to 15-12 heading to the second quarter.  
  • Crawford made four free throws to tie the contest 18-18 at the 6:38 mark of the second quarter.  
  • Cordasia Harris gave Alabama its first lead at 22-20 with 4:20 to play in the first half. 
  • Harris's basket began a 19-2 run that put the Lady Hornets up 37-22 at halftime. 
  • Nia Jordan trimmed ASU's lead to 43-32 at the 6:40 mark of the third quarter.  
  • A 7-2 Alabama State run extended the lead to 52-36 on an Ashley Gray layup with under 3:00 to play in the third quarter.  
  • Chanel Wilson's 3-pointer with 44 seconds remaining in the third quarter cut the deficit to 52-43. 
  • The Lady Hornets held a 55-43 lead on a Crawford three to close the third quarter scoring.  
  • Bethune-Cookman went on a 6-0 run to get within 10 points, 52-42, with 4:53 left in the fourth quarter.  
  • The Wildcats did get the lead down to 68-60 on a Kayla Clark layup with 2:03 left, but that was as close as they would climb.  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 
  • Shmya Ward scored 20 points and 11 rebounds, marking her four double-doubles while scoring in double figures for the 16th game, scoring in double-figures this season.  
  • Crawford put up double-digit points for the 21st time, adding 16 points and six assists. 
  • Harris posted her 11th double-figure scoring game of the year, scoring 10 points.  
  • Kayla Clark had a game-high 12 rebounds and Wilson led with 11 points for the Wildcats.
