Hornets close out non-conference play with victory over Johnson at home

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Amarr Knox led a balanced Alabama State attack in an 84-53 victory over Johnson (Fla.) in the final non-conference game of the season at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on Tuesday night.
 
Knox finished with 17 points, one shy of his career high, on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. He also knocked down 5-of-6 from the free throw line, grabbed four rebounds, and dished out three assists.
 
TJ Madlock scored in double figures for the 12th time this season with 14 points, while Eric Coleman added 11 points and five rebounds off the bench. Jasteven Walker and Sean Smith each added 10 points off the bench, with Smith dishing out three assists.
 
How It Happened
  • Alabama State grabbed a 13-point halftime lead after falling behind early using 46.2 (18-of-39) percent from the floor while missing all 12 of its three-point opportunities. They also converted 66.7 (4-of-6) percent from the free throw line.
  • The Suns shot 34.6 (9-of-26) percent from the floor and 41.7 (5-of-12) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 66.7 (4-of-6) percent from the free throw line.
  • For the game, Alabama State finished at 48.7 (37-of-76) percent from the floor and 76.9 (10-of-13) percent from beyond the arc. Meanwhile, Johnson finished at 33.3 (18-of-54) percent from the floor and 33.3 (7-of-21) percent from beyond the arc.
  • There was one lead change and one time that the game was tied with Alabama State leading for 34:29.
  • The Hornets dominated in every miscellaneous category including points in the paint (64-20) and bench points (54-28).
Alabama State Notes
  • The Hornets did not connect on a three-pointer for the first time in 231 games, the last time they missed all their attempts came against UAPB on Jan. 11 (2016).
  • Madlock is now 53 points shy of 1,000 for his career, while Isaiah Range is 28 points away after his eight points on the night.
  • Micah Octave recorded a pair of steals in the game, running his streak to 13 consecutive games with a steal.
  • The five players in double figures is the second straight game for the Hornets with five players in double digits, and the third time this season.
