Alabama State hits the road to open Southwestern Athletic Conference play this weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State hits the road to open Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) this weekend against Mississippi Valley State and UAPB beginning Saturday night.
 
Alabama State (5-8), who was picked to finish eighth in the preseason poll, opens conference pay at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex on Saturday night with tip at 6 p.m. against MVSU. They will then travel to Pine Bluff (Ark.) to face UAPB at H.O. Clemmons Arena on Monday night.
 
Both games can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network.
 
The Hornets enter the weekend following an 84-53 victory over Johnson (Fla.) at home on Tuesday with five players scoring in double figures. It marked the second consecutive game the Hornets had five players in double figures and the third time this season.
 
TJ Madlock leads Alabama State in scoring and is seventh in the conference at 15.7 points per game, while CJ Hines and Isaiah Range are each averaging 11.1 points per game. Hines is among the league leaders in assists with 39, while Ubong Okon is third in the conference in rebounds at 6.6 per game.

  • The Hornets had their streak of three-pointers in consecutive games snapped at 231 on Tuesday night, but still have a streak of 177 consecutive road games with a three-pointer dating back to the 2010-11 season.
  • Micah Octave has recorded a steal in each of the 13 games this season including three two times this season.
  • Range and Madlock are each closing in on 1,000 career points with Range needing just 28 after his eight-point performance against Johnson (Fla.). Meanwhile, Madlock needs 53 to reach the mark.

  • Mississippi Valley State is in search of its first win of the season after playing its first 13 games on the road to open the 2023-24 season.
  • The Delta Devils are led by Rayquan Brown in scoring at 14.8 points per game, while Arecko Gipson is at 9.9 and Donovan Sanders at 9.8 per game.
  • Brown is currently ninth in the conference in scoring through the first 13 games this season.
  • Sanders leads the team defensively averaging 1.77 steals per game, a mark that is top 10 in the conference.
UAPB Notes
  • UAPB enters the weekend after winning its last game and has three scorers among the best in the conference.
  • Kylen Milton leads the conference in scoring at 19.45 points per game, while Rashad Williams is second at 19.15 points per game. Joe French is currently fifth in the conference at 17.38 points per game.
  • Ismael Plet is sixth in the conference in rebounding at 6.15 per game.
  • Williams is second in the conference in assists at 4.31 per game, while Lonnell Martin is fifth at 3.46 per game.
