Lady Hornets Sweep Doubleheader From MVSU

ITTA BENA, Miss. | Alabama State University softball made quick work of Mississippi Valley State, winning both games by the NCAA run-rule on Saturday. 

GAME 1 | Alabama State 9, Mississippi Valley State 0
Freshman Kohana Pousson was dealing on Saturday, tossing a three-hit shutout to lead the Alabama State Hornets past the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes 9-0.

Pousson (1-3) went the distance for Alabama State (13-17, ), giving up three hits, walking none and striking out two.

In the batter's box, the Hornets were led by senior Kindal DeRamus, who went 2-for-2 on the day with a triple, a walk and an RBI. Freshman Kendall Smiley put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Senior Jaeda Gardner also helped out for Alabama State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets took the lead for good in the third, scoring for the first time in the inning. Alabama State's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Gardner.

The Hornets also added runs in the fourth and sixth innings on the way to the 9-0 victory.

GAME 2 | Alabama State 12, Mississippi Valley State 3

-Sophomore Kelsey Long collected four RBIs to help propel the Alabama State Hornets past the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devilettes 12-3 on Saturday.

Junior Charity Bibbs (6-9) started in the circle and picked up the win for Alabama State (14-17, ). The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, two earned, on four hits, allowing three walks and striking out three.

Long went 1-for-3 with a triple and a walk in addition to her four RBIs for the Hornets. Sophomore Alana Scott compiled a standout performance at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI. Freshman Kendall Smiley also chipped in for Alabama State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding a triple.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Alabama State scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a sophomore Jasmine Rogers.

The Delta Devilettes then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 3-1 until the Hornets expanded their advantage in the second. which brought the score to 6-1 in favor of the Hornets.

Mississippi Valley State narrowed Alabama State's lead to 6-2 before the Hornets stretched the advantage to 9-2 in the fourth inning. The Hornets scored three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run triple from Long.

The Delta Devilettes fought back, closing the gap to 9-3 until Alabama State added some insurance in the fifth. bringing the Alabama State advantage to 12-3. The score remained 12-3 for the rest of the game, as the Hornets coasted to the win.
