Four Hornets Score in Double Figures, but Alabama State Falls at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. | Alabama State placed four players in double figures Monday night, but Memphis pulled away for an 88-67 victory over the Hornets at FedEx Forum.

Asjon Anderson led Alabama State with 16 points, while Damarien Yates added 13, Tyler Mason scored 12 and Tyler Byrd finished with 11. The Hornets (3-9) also got nine rebounds from Yates as they continued to compete on the glass and in transition, but struggled to find consistency from the field.

Memphis (5-7) shot 50.8% overall and 43.3% from 3-point range, turning a nine-point halftime advantage into a comfortable win. Dug McDaniel paced the Tigers with 23 points, while Curtis Givens III added 18 and Ashton Hardaway scored 15.

Alabama State kept the game within reach early, trimming a double-digit deficit late in the first half behind timely shooting from Yates and Anderson. The Hornets went into the locker room down 42-33 after closing the half with a late 3-pointer by Cam Palesse.

The Tigers opened the second half with a run, stretching the margin to as many as 23 points as they capitalized on turnovers and converted second-chance opportunities. Alabama State continued to battle, getting interior scoring from Mason and free throws from Anderson, but could not cut significantly into the deficit.

The Hornets finished the night shooting 35.9% from the field and 27.6% from beyond the arc. Alabama State held a 37-40 rebounding margin and scored 36 bench points, but Memphis' efficiency and ball movement proved to be the difference.

Alabama State returns to the court on on Dec. 29 against the Mississippi State University in Starkville, Miss.
