STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Alabama State Hornets rolled past the Northwestern State Demons 17-9 on Saturday.
Freshman Mason Quinnie (1-5) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Alabama State (2-16). The right-hander went two innings, giving up three runs, zero earned, on two hits, allowing three walks and striking out two.
Junior Brooke Ramsey went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk in addition to her four RBIs for the Hornets. Scott put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 3-for-3 with a double, a walk and four RBI. Freshman Ayana Frank also contributed for Alabama State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Hornets first put runs on the board in the first inning. Alabama State scored twice, with one run coming across on Scott's single.
The Hornets lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the second trailing 4-2. The Alabama State offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run double off the bat of Ramsey and a two-run double from Scott, which brought the score to 7-4 in favor of the Hornets.
Alabama State held Northwestern State without a run before expanding their lead to 13-4 the following inning. The Hornets bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a two-run double off the bat of freshman Talee Sims.
The Demons fought back, closing the gap to 13-9 until Alabama State added some insurance in the fifth. The Hornets scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run single off the bat of Ramsey, bringing the score to 17-9 in favor of Alabama State. The score remained 17-9 for the rest of the game, as the Hornets coasted to the win.
