MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The University of Southern Miss rallied for a run in the eighth inning to earn an 8-7 over Alabama State University softball on Wednesday at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
Trailing 7-3, Tallee Sims three-run home run highlighted a four-run seventh inning to tie the game and force extra innings.Â
Sophomore Kohana Pouson (2-5) started and took the loss in the circle for Alabama State (3-22). Pouson gave up eight runs, seven earned, on 13 hits with one strikeout over 8.0 innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets were trailing 3-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Junior Alana Scott came across to score the lone run of the inning for Alabama State and get them on the board.
The Hornets kept the deficit at 3-1 before tying the score in the third. Alabama State pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Scott that scored junior Brooke Ramsey and freshman Jaibriel Terrell, which evened the score at 3-3.
Southern Miss busted up the tie and grabbed a 7-3 lead moving into the seventh, when Alabama State tied the game at seven. The Hornets bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of freshman Talee Sims. Southern Miss then scored one time over the remaining one inning to break the tie and grab the 8-7 win.
