SWAC CHAMPS ! Alabama State Men's Hoops Downs Jackson State in Instant Classic

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. | CJ Hines collected 20 points to help lead the Alabama State men's basketball team past the Jackson State Tigers 60-56 at The Gateway Center Arena at College Park Saturday. It's the Hornets first SWAC championship since the 2010-11 season.

Hines led the Hornets (19-15) with 20 points and three steals. TJ Madlock tacked on seven points, 12 rebounds, three steals, and two blocks and Jasteven Walker chipped in with five points.

The Alabama State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, pouring nine threes. Hines was the most prolific shooter for the Hornets, draining four treys in the contest.

Alabama State's defense held Jackson State to only 37 percent shooting from the field, including 29.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Hornets also limited Daeshun Ruffin to 4-of-16 shooting and nine points in the game.

How It Happened

  • Ubong Okon gave the Hornets an 11-7 lead with 10:29 left in the first half.
  • Jackson State went on a12-0 run to build a 19-11 lead after a Jayme Mitchell 3-Pointer with 6:08 left in the first half.
  • A CJ Hine three closed the gap to 19-17 with just over five minutes remaining in the opening half.
  • The Hornets outscored JSU 8-2 to closing the deficit to 26-25 on a Hine layup with six seconds to go before halftime.
  • Jackson State used a 13-4 run to build a 39-30 lead just under five minutes into the second half.
  • ASU went on a 9-0 to tie the game 39-39 on a Shawn Fulcher 3-pointer with 10:15 to play in the second half.
  • A 3-pointer from Hines gave ASU a 44-41 at the 6:12 mark.
  • Dorian McMillian's jumper with 1:48 remaining put the Tigers back in front 53-52.
  • Baskets by Micah Octave and TJ Madlock and two Fulcher free throws gave ASU a 58-53 lead with 13 seconds to go in the game.
  • The Tigers closed the lead to 58-56 with eight seconds left before Micah Simpson iced the game with a pair of free throws to give ASU a 60-56 lead with six seconds left.
