Alabama State Down Prairie View A&M to Sweep Road Swing

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas |  The Alabama State women's basketball team scored 36 points off of turnovers on the way to a 76-58 victory against the Prairie View A&M on the road Saturday.

The Lady Hornets (7-11, 4-3) had three players score in double figures, led by Amari Franklin, who had 15 points and two steals. Ny'Keria Flowers tacked on 12 points and three steals and Kaitlyn Bryant chipped in as well with 11 points and three steals off the bench.

Alabama State shared the ball well in Saturday's game, racking up 17 assists on 33 made field goals. Individually, Shamya Reid led the way for the Lady Hornets with five assists.

Alabama State forced 32 Prairie View A&M turnovers while committing 20 themselves in Saturday's game. The Lady Hornets turned those takeaways into 36 points on the offensive end of the floor. Charlese McClendon led the way individually with three steals.

How It Happened

After falling behind 8-6, Alabama State went on a 6-0 run with 5:08 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Clearia Peterson, to take a 12-8 lead. The Lady Hornets then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 17-10 advantage. Alabama State capitalized on 10 Prairie View A&M turnovers in the period, turning them into nine points on the other end of the floor.

Alabama State kept its first quarter lead intact before going on an 8-0 run starting at the 8:44 mark in the second period, highlighted by a three from Taylor Smith, to increase its lead to 25-14. The Lady Panthers cut into that lead, but the Lady Hornets still enjoyed a 35-25 advantage heading into halftime. Alabama State was strong from deep in the period, knocking down three three-point shots to account for nine of its 18 points.

Alabama State continued to preserve its halftime lead before going on a 10-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Alanah Pooler, to expand its lead further to 47-36 with 2:08 to go in the third. The Lady Hornets held onto that lead for the rest of the frame and entered the fourth quarter with a 54-43 edge. Alabama State played well near the basket, scoring 16 of its 19 points in the paint.

Alabama State started tacking on points in the fourth almost immediately, going on an 11-0 run, finished off by McClendon's jumper, to grow the lead to 65-43 with 8:10 to go in the contest. The Lady Panthers narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Lady Hornets still cruised the rest of the way for the 76-58 win. Alabama State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 22 points in the paint.
