MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Behind a dominant complete-game performance from Kohana Pousson, Alabama State University softball rolled to a 7–0 victory over Alcorn State in the nightcap of the HBCU Softball Classic on Friday.
Pousson was nearly untouchable in the circle, tossing a one-hit shutout while striking out 13 and walking none to earn the win and improve to 2-1 on the season. She faced just 22 batters and allowed only a first-inning single as Alabama State's defense played error-free softball behind her.
Alabama State Breaks It Open Midgame
The Hornets (4-10) broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning, capitalizing on Alcorn State miscues. Pinch runner Meshayla Pettaway stole second and later scored on an error, while Talee Sims swiped third and crossed the plate on a throwing error to give Alabama State a 2-0 advantage.
The Hornets erupted for four runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Jaibriel Terrell delivered the biggest blow, ripping a two-run triple to right-center that scored McKenzie Owens and Jayla Stewart. Terrell later scored on a wild pitch, and Sims added an RBI single down the left-field line to extend the lead to 6-0.
Alabama State added its final run in the sixth when Owens came around to score on a passed ball.
