HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | The Alabama State women's basketball team held Alabama A&M to just 10 percent from beyond the arc in a 1-for-10 shooting performance, but fell 51-43 to the Bulldogs on the road Saturday.
Alanah Pooler led the Lady Hornets (14-13, 11-5) with 10 points and nine rebounds. Amari Franklin also added six points and two steals off the bench and Clearia Peterson chipped in as well with five points and seven rebounds.
Alabama State grabbed 46 rebounds in Saturday's game compared to Alabama A&M's 34, led by Pooler's nine boards. The Lady Hornets also cleaned up the offensive glass, turning 21 rebounds into 11 second chance points.
Alabama State's defense held Alabama A&M to only 10 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 37 percent from the field. The Bulldogs did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed nine second chance points while Alabama State cleared 25 defensive rebounds.
How It Happened
After falling behind 8-3, Alabama State went on a 6-0 run with 2:04 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from Franklin, to take a 9-8 lead. The Lady Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered the second quarter down 10-9.
The Lady Hornets continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 22-20 halftime deficit.
Alabama State's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Lady Hornets faced a 35-28 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Alabama State played well near the basket, scoring six of its eight points in the paint.
Alabama State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 51-43. Alabama State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.
