Simpson Nets 19 In Alabama State's loss to Grambling

GRAMBLING, La. | Caylee Simpson led Alabama State University women's basketball with 19 points, but the Hornets had a five-game winning streak snapped in a 67-53 to Grambling State on the road Saturday.

Clearia Peterson tacked on nine points and seven rebounds, and McClendon chipped in as well with three points and 13 rebounds to follow Simpson.

Alabama State out-rebounded Grambling 37-33 in Saturday's game, paced by McClendon's 13 boards. The Lady Hornets also grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second-chance points.

The Alabama State defense caused its share of mistakes in Saturday's game, forcing 19 Grambling turnovers. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the offensive end of the floor. Ny'Keria Flowers led the way individually for the Lady Hornets with four steals.

How It Happened

Alabama State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 20-15 at the end of the first quarter.

Grambling State kept adding to that lead, building a 32-21 advantage before Alabama State went on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 32-26, a score that would hold until halftime.

Grambling continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 36-26 advantage before Alabama State went on a 7-0 run to trim its deficit to 36-33 with 5:39 to go in the third. Grambling countered and stretched its lead to 50-40 heading into the fourth. Alabama State played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 14 points in the paint.

Alabama State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 67-53. Alabama State pulled down four offensive rebounds to score five second-chance points out of 13 total in the period
