Hornets Women's Tennis Sweeps Mississippi Valley State to Open SWAC POD 1

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The Alabama State University women's tennis team opened Southwestern Athletic Conference POD 1 play in dominant fashion Saturday, defeating Mississippi Valley State 5-0 at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.

The Hornets controlled the match from start to finish, securing the doubles point and winning four completed singles matches in straight sets to improve to 3-6 overall on the season. Mississippi Valley State fell to 0-3.

Alabama State took early command in doubles play. The pairing of Kesmat El Tawil and Senna Van Den Heuvel cruised to a 6-0 win over Lily Gansange and Nina Schius at No. 2 doubles, while Cleanne Pickel and Alexia Campagna secured the No. 3 doubles position by forfeit to clinch the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles match featuring Diana Craciun and Melisa Mekic was halted with the Hornets leading 5-0.

In singles competition, Alabama State continued its dominant performance. El Tawil earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Gansange at No. 2 singles, while Mekic followed with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Alice Legnedohl at No. 3. Campagna also posted a shutout performance at No. 4 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Schius.

Pickel added another point for the Hornets at No. 6 singles by default. Meanwhile, Craciun and Jovana Petrovic were both well on their way to wins before their matches were stopped due to the team result being decided. Craciun led 6-0, 3-0 at No. 1 singles, while Petrovic held a 6-0, 5-0 advantage at No. 5.
