Alabama State Falls to Alcorn State in SWAC Tournament Opener

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. | The Alabama State men's basketball team placed three players in double figures only to fall 77-65 to Alcorn State University in the opening round of the SWAC Men's Basketball Tournament at the the Gateway Center Arena at College Park on Monday.

The Hornets (10-22) had four players score in double figures, led by Jerquarius Stanback, who had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Micah Simpson added 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists, and Tyler Mason chipped in as well with 12 points from the bench.

Stanback pulled down six offensive rebounds to lead the Alabama State offense which grabbed 14 boards and turned them into 20 second chance points.

Alabama State did a great job disrupting Alcorn State shots in the contest, coming away with five blocks. Stanback's four rejections led the way individually for the Hornets.

How It Happened

After jumping out to a 10-8 advantage, Alabama State went on a 7-0 run with 11:59 left in the first half to increase its lead to 17-8. The Hornets then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 32-31.

Alcorn State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 36-32 advantage before Alabama State went on a 7-0 run to seize a 39-36 lead with 17:07 to go in the contest. Alcorn State re-asserted control, outscoring the Hornets 41-26 the rest of the way to hand Alabama State the 77-65 loss. Alabama State got out on the break in the period, scoring seven fast break points.
