MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Alabama State University softball split a Southwestern Athletic Conference doubleheader with Bethune-Cookman on Saturday at the ASU Softball Complex, rallying for a 5-4 win in the opener before falling 9-1 in the nightcap.
Game 1: Alabama State 5, Bethune-Cookman 4
Alabama State (18-28, 11-8 SWAC) erased an early two-run deficit and used a three-run third inning to secure the come-from-behind victory.
Bethune-Cookman struck first with a pair of runs in the opening frame, but the Hornets chipped away in the second on an RBI bunt single by Sharon Parker. ASU then took control in the third when Bailee Williams delivered a two-run home run to center, followed by an RBI single from Talee Sims to make it 4-2.
Williams added insurance in the sixth with an RBI double, which proved critical as the Wildcats plated two runs in the seventh to pull within one.
Mason Quinnie (4-6) earned the win in the circle, tossing 6.0 innings while allowing four runs on 11 hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Amanda Cintron recorded her first save of the season, closing out the final inning.
At the plate, Bailee Williams led the Hornets, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, and three RBI. JaNiyah Boykin added a 2-for-3 performance, while Arianna Cox-Cole and Sharon Parker each contributed key RBIs.
Bethune-Cookman was paced by Emma Bradley-Tse and Alana Cypress, who each collected two hits. Sofia Coleman (4-6) took the loss after surrendering four runs in 3.0 innings.
Game 2: Bethune-Cookman 9, Alabama State 1
In the nightcap, Bethune-Cookman (17-26, 13-8 SWAC) used a four-run first inning to seize early momentum and never looked back in a 9-1 victory.
The Wildcats capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting to build a 4-0 lead in the first and extended their advantage with runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.
Alabama State's lone run came in the second inning when Bailee Williams blasted a solo home run to center field.
Kohana Pousson (8-7) was charged with the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) without recording an out. Amanda Cintron provided relief, working 5.2 innings, while Quinnie finished the final 1.1 innings.
Bethune-Cookman's Mia Gonzalez (10-13) earned the win, allowing just one run on two hits over 4.0 innings.
Offensively, Williams again led Alabama State with a 2-for-2 performance and the team's only RBI. Alana Scott, Arianna Cox-Cole, and Tiffany Bruss each added a hit.
The Wildcats were led by Arianna Reynolds, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Kween Tauala added three hits and an RBI. Emma Bradley-Tse also recorded two hits and scored twice.
