GULFPORT, Miss. | Alabama State's postseason came to an end Thursday night as the Hornets fell 7-3 to Southern University in an elimination game of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament at the Gulfport Sportsplex.
Alabama State struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning. After Jaibriel Terrell walked and stole second, Brooke Ramsey reached on an error, allowing Terrell to score. Ayana Frank followed with an RBI single through the left side to give the Hornets an early 2-0 advantage.
The Hornets added their final run in the top of the fourth. Addison Giles singled up the middle and later scored on Meshayla Pettaway's RBI double to left field, pushing Alabama State's lead to 3-0.
Southern responded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a run on an RBI single by Ava Wallace to cut the deficit to 3-1. The Lady Jaguars then used a decisive six-run fifth inning to take control of the game. The inning was highlighted by Laila Clark's RBI triple and a two-run home run by Abigail Mitchell, along with RBI singles from Wallace and Izabell Astran, as Southern surged ahead 7-3.
Alabama State was limited to five hits in the contest and was held scoreless over the final three innings.
KPousson (12-8) took the loss for the Hornets, allowing six runs in 4 1/3 innings while striking out six. Amanda Cintron and Mason Quinnie combined for the final 1 2/3 innings in relief. Jordynn Jennings (10-2) earned the win for Southern, throwing three scoreless innings of relief with two strikeouts, while Aaliyah Zabala made the start.
Offensively, Alabama State was led by Brooke Ramsey, Ayana Frank and Addison Giles, who each recorded a hit, with Frank driving in a run. Pettaway added the Hornets' lone extra-base hit with her RBI double.
Southern was paced by Laila Clark, who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Ava Wallace, who finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Abigail Mitchell added a key two-run home run and drove in two.
The loss closes the 2026 season for Alabama State with a 24-32 overall record.
