MONTGOMERY, Ala.  Since being named Vice President and Director of Athletics at Alabama State University on August 16, 2021, Dr. Jason Cable has led ASU Athletics through five years of transformational growth marked by championship success, record academic achievement, unprecedented revenue generation, significant facility investments, student-athlete development, and meaningful community impact. 

Guided by the department's Strategic Dominance plan, Cable has positioned Alabama State Athletics among the most successful and innovative programs in HBCU and NCAA Division I athletics. 

FUNDRAISING & REVENUE GENERATION 

Under Cable's leadership, Alabama State Athletics has experienced unprecedented growth in philanthropic and corporate support. ASU launched its first athletics-led fundraising campaign, welcomed more than 500 new Hornet Club investors, and generated more than $500,000 in annual campaign support. The department's innovative Hornet Student-Athlete NIL Fund raised more than $500,000 in its first year. 

During his tenure, corporate sponsorships have increased by 500%, overall athletic donations by 300%, and ASU secured the largest individual gift in athletics history, the largest gift to women's basketball in athletic history, and the university's largest corporate sponsorship of $954,000. Alabama State also secured a $1.5 million Magic City Classic event guarantee and developed entrepreneurial partnerships such as the Woodford Reserve Hornet Blend, which generated $33,000 in less than 72 hours. 

FACILITIES ENHANCEMENT 

Cable has overseen a comprehensive facilities improvement strategy focused on recruiting, competition, student-athlete development, and the fan experience. Investments have included new video boards for football, baseball, and softball; new basketball and volleyball competition floors; track and field renovation at the Horace Crump Complex; baseball and softball batting cages; locker room renovations; new turf at Hornet Stadium and the Houston Markham Complex; renovated weight rooms; a new indoor golf facility; and extensive athletics branding enhancements. 

 His tenure also included helping to establish one of the nation's first full-service YMCA facilities on a university campus, creating a resource serving both ASU and the Montgomery community, and establishing the Courtney Stewart Creative Suite, the first multimedia center dedicated solely to athletic content creation and innovation.  

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE 

Academic excellence has become a hallmark of Alabama State Athletics. ASU earned the SWAC Academic Achievement Award for five consecutive years, while a record 74% of student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA or higher, including a historic 243 student-athletes. 

The department achieved its highest APR in history at 972, with seven programs recording perfect 1,000 single-year APR scores and every ASU program exceeding a 930 multi-year APR. Cable also expanded holistic student-athlete support through the 4 for 40 Initiative, nutrition programming, mental health resources, leadership development, career preparation, and the Her Development Program. 

STUDENT-ATHLETE AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS 

Alabama State has captured 34 SWAC championships during Cable's tenure, won the James Frank Commissioner's Cup three times in five years, earned the Sadie Magee/Barbara Jacket Award four consecutive years, and was recognized as 2025 HBCU Sports Program of the Year and the 2026 best HBCU Social Media Presence.  Competitive highlights include football's first 10-win season in 21 years, men's basketball's first SWAC Tournament championship since 2014 and first NCAA Tournament victory in school history, and men's tennis's HBCU National Championship. 

ASU student-athletes have earned 231 All-SWAC selections, 200 SWAC Player of the Week honors, 23 All-America honors, 18 All-Region selections, 28 Player of the Year awards, and 17 opportunities at the professional level, while ASU coaches have earned 12 Coach of the Year honors. Alabama State also became the first NCAA Division I institution to sponsor varsity women's flag football and the first HBCU to distribute Alston Awards. 

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT & STUDENT-ATHLETE IMPACT 

Cable's leadership philosophy has emphasized preparing student-athletes for success well beyond competition. Alabama State student-athletes contributed more than 5,000 community service hours, representing more than $150,000 in economic impact.  His leadership has influenced three student-athletes, who have been recognized as SWAC Women of the Year during his five years as the Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics. 

Through strategic partnerships, expanded NIL opportunities, Cost of Attendance support, career development, leadership programming, and community engagement, Cable has established a culture centered on the complete student-athlete experience. 

Five years after his arrival, Dr. Jason Cable's tenure represents a period of unprecedented momentum for Alabama State Athletics defined by championships, academic excellence, revenue growth, facility transformation, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to student-athletes and the Alabama State University community.
