Anthony Sewell

Anthony Sewell has been a key member of Lewis Jackson’s staff, helping lead ASU to back-to-back SWAC regular season titles in 2007-08 and 2008-09.  He also has been a part of the Hornets’ appearances in the NIT Tournament (2008), two NCAA Tournaments (2009, 2011) and the CIT (2014).
 
A 20-year coaching veteran, Sewell began his coaching career as a student assistant at Troy University (1987-1991), helping the Trojans advance to the NCAA Division II Final Four (1998), in addition to winning the Gulf Coast South Conference title (1991). During that time, the Trojans had an overall record of 88-31.
 
In 1991, Sewell became the assistant basketball coach for Pearl River Community College in Poplar, Miss., before transitioning to Luverne High as the head basketball coach and assistant football coach. There, he led the basketball team to an 18-game winning streak, earning him the Conference Coach of the Year Award. As Luverne’s assistant football coach, Sewell helped coach the team to a Class 2A State Championship (1998).
 
A year later, Sewell became the head boys’ basketball coach of Southside (Selma) High (1998-2001), where he led the team to three Class 5A Area titles and second and third-place finishes in the state (1999, 2001). At the time he left Southside, he had accumulated an overall high school coaching record of 119-41.
 
Sewell returned to Troy University as an assistant coach, becoming part of a staff that led the Trojans to their first NCAA Division I (2003) and NIT Invitation Tournament (2004) appearances. During his tenure, Troy finished with an overall record of 62-31 and won three Atlantic Sun Conference titles.
 
A graduate of Troy University with a degree in criminal justice, Sewell is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., the Black Coaches Association (BCA) and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
 
A native of Selma, Ala., Sewell is the son of A.A. and Nancy Gardener Sewell, and the father of Carter Andrew Sewell.  He has a twin brother Andrew and a sister, Teri.
