Savannah McHellon

Savannah McHellon begins her fifth year at Alabama State as an assistant coach, under head coach Todd Bradley.

Last season, she helped lead Alabama State to the SWAC East Division crown before being eliminated in the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament. She also helped the Lady Hornets earn distinction in the conference by coaching the Player of the Year - Kindall DeRamus - and the Pitcher of the Year - Bailey Greenlee. The team also had five selections for all-conference at the conclusion of the season.

During the 2022 campaign, McHellon helped guide Alabame State to a championship berth in the conference tournament while also coaching DeRamus to her first Player of the Year honor. The Lady Hornets finished the year with four players earning all-conference honors.

The 2021 season saw the Lady Hornets capture their second consecutive conference championship over Alcorn State. The Lady Hornets had four players named all-conference including Madison Myers who was named the SWAC Newcomer of the Year.

During her first season as an assistant and primarily the pitching coach, Alabama State received two consecutive Pitcher of the Week titles (from Skyler Sullivan and Alexa Veamoi) before the season was shortened due to COVID-19 pandemic. The team also consisted of four hitters batting above .300, including Alexis Sydnor at .449.

She spent last season at West Clovis High School in Fresno (Calif.) as an assistant coach where she was responsible for instruction of game strategies and techniques. She also assisted in evaluating individual player and team performances, increasing player skill levels with fundamental work and motivating players to be student-athletes.

McHellon, a native of Jonesboro (Ga.), comes to Alabama State after a stellar career at Fresno State where she ended her career with a .560 slugging percentage – sixth in program history. She also finished eighth in program history with 24 career home runs. During her time at Fresno State, she was also named Mountain West Player of the Week two times in February 2017 and February 2018. She was also named All-Pacific Region First Team before her graduation.

She played in 54 games with 53 starts during her senior season, finishing with 14 home runs (seventh most in program history) which was the most hit by any Bulldog since 2010. She had a pair of multi-homer games and hit two grand slams, while having three walk-off home runs with two in run-rule games. McHellon was fourth in the Mountain West with 31 walks during her senior season.

Prior to Fresno State, McHellon was a National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I All-American at Northwest Florida State College in 2016 after transferring from Georgia. She played in 47 games with 44 starts, hitting .405 with 23 home runs and driving in 58 runs. She also went 20-2 on the mound with a 1.50 earned run average and 180 strikeouts in 149 innings. She was ranked as the 18th-best prospect by Student Sports Softball coming out of Ola High School.

McHellon graduated from Fresno State with a degree in Media, Communications and Journalism with an emphasis in advertising.
