Andrew Chatmon enters his 17th season as the head women's bowling coach at Alabama State University, leading the team to two SWAC Championships in 2016-17, 2021-22 and 2023-24 seasons and the regular season championships in 2013-14 and 2017-18.
He helped lead Alabama State to 65 wins during the 2019-2020 season and a third-place finish in the regular season SWAC standings. The Lady Hornets also pulled the upset over nationally-ranked opponents five times last season, including defeating defending National Champion Steven F Austin in Houston at the Kat Klash sponsored by Sam Houston State in November.
Chatmon and the Lady Hornets in his 12 years have set school records in wins six times including 82 wins in 2018-19, and has set the tone for the program in each of his 12 seasons. He has 606 career wins and a number of school records. He is a four-time SWAC Coach of the Year winner, 2011-2012, 2013-2014 including back to back years of 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.
The Lady Hornets have advanced to the SWAC Championship final match two times, winning the regular season Championship, then losing to Alabama A&M in 2013-2014 and then winning it in 2016-2017 against Texas Southern, both matches were televised on ESPNU.
He has had five student-athletes named as Freshman of the Year: Danielle Walker in 2012, Kaila Ryan in 2013, Lindsey Paredez in 2014 and Haley Young in 2016 and Alize Stevenson in 2018. He has had multiple players named to the All SWAC team as well (Walker, Ryan, Briana Wells, Paredez, Young, Hresko, Sledge, Hosein, Stevenson) some of them multiple times.
In 2014 and 2015 Walker was twice named Player of the Year and Ryan in 2016. Not only has Chatmon reached new horizons on the athletic side his team has had academic success. In 2012-13 the Lady Hornets had the highest GPA in the Nation with a 3.69. Many of the Lady Hornets have made the NTCA All-American All-Academic team each year.
Another 2014 accomplishment was being ranked national at the number 16th spot in the nation. This is the highest ranking in the history of the school program.
Chatmon brought 40 years of bowling experience to ASU and six years of coaching in the YABA Junior League in Montgomery. He also has nine years as a USBC Silver Level Certified Coach.
He attended Alabama State from 1981-1985, where he majored in business management and played on ASU’s baseball team where he was third on the team in RBIs and a career .323 batting average.
Chatmon is a 2016 ASU graduate with a degree in business management and earned his master's degree from Auburn Univeristy-Montgomery in sports management in 2023. He is a member of Omega Psi Phi Inc. (service fraternity) Phi Beta Lamda (business Fraternity), Shrine Mason and the National 10 pin Coaches Association. Chatmon was a spring 2021 inductee into the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society of Education, focused on leadership, scholarship and service.
A native of Baltimore Md., Chatmon is the proud parent of three children -- Jordan and Andrew, who are Alabama State graduates and Myles is a recent graduates of Park Crossing High.
