Andrew Chatmon enters his 19th season as the head women's bowling coach at Alabama State University, leading the team to a trio of SWAC Championships in 2017, 2022, and 2024, while picking up at least a share of the regular season championship following the 2013-14, 2017-18, and 2024-25 campaigns.
In his 18 years with the program, Chatmon, a USBC Silver Level Certified Coach for 15 seasons, has led the Lady Hornets to a program-best No. 16 national ranking while breaking the school record win total seven times – including a program-best 89 wins in 2021-22 – on his way to 955 career victories. Chatmon is a four-time SWAC Coach of the Year (2012, 2014, 2018, 2019), and was inducted into the CAA Central Alabama division of the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in 2022 for his contributions to the sport of bowling in the region.
Chatmon’s success coaching has been consistently highlighted on the All-SWAC Teams at the end of each season. Alabama State managed to take home the SWAC Player of the Year honor in three consecutive seasons, with Danielle Walker winning in 2014 and 2015 and Kaila Ryan following in 2016. Seven student-athletes have been named SWAC Freshman of the Year, including Walker – 2012, Ryan – 2013, Lindsey Paredez – 2014, Haley Young – 2016, Alize Stevenson – 2018, Savanna Razor – 2021 and Jenna Knight – 2025. Multiple players have been named to the All-SWAC Team throughout his tenure, most recently Knight, Olivia Miller and Taylor Lee following the 2025-26 season.
Off the lanes, the Alabama State women’s bowling program has regularly outperformed competition in the classrooms under Chatmon’s leadership. The 2012-13 Lady Hornets had the highest cumulative GPA in the nation (3.69), while Alabama State student-athletes regularly appear on the NTCA All-Academic Team at season’s end.
Chatmon brought 40 years of bowling experience to ASU and six years of coaching in the Young American Bowling Alliance (YABA) Junior League in Montgomery.
He attended Alabama State from 1981-1985, where he majored in business management and played on ASU’s baseball team where he was third on the team in RBIs and a career .323 batting average. He graduated from ASU in 2016 with a degree in business management before earning his Master’s in Sports Management from Auburn University-Montgomery in 2023.
Chatmon is a member of Omega Psi Phi Inc. (service fraternity) Phi Beta Lamda (business fraternity), Shrine Mason and the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA). He was a 2021 inductee into the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society of Education, focused on leadership, scholarship and service.
