Cliff Covington is an accomplished cheerleading coach and choreographer with over 14 years of combined cheer and coaching experience, including 9+ years connected to Alabama State University as both an athlete and coach. He currently serves as the Assistant Coach, specializing in stunts for the Alabama State University Cheerleaders, where he contributes to recruitment, stunt progression, competition routine development, and overall athlete growth.
A former five-year collegiate cheerleader at ASU (2012–2017), Cliff brings deep experience in game-day performance, leadership, and program tradition. His cheer journey began in Fort Walton Beach, FL, where he competed for Choctawhatchee High School, winning the 2012 National High School Cheerleading Championship in the Super Varsity Co-Ed Division.
In addition to his school-based cheer career, Cliff expanded his athletic performance by cheering two seasons with Bama Blaze Elite All-Star Cheer (2022–2024), where he trained at an elite level and continued developing advanced stunt and performance skills.
Cliff also serves as a Varsity Spirit Judge, evaluating high school and collegiate cheer competitions for UCA as a Stunt/Building Judge. His judging experience provides him with a deep understanding of scoring systems, technical expectations, safety standards, and competitive trends—knowledge that directly strengthens his coaching by allowing him to train athletes and build routines that meet and exceed industry standards at the highest level.
Before returning to coach at ASU, Cliff served as the Head Cheer Coach at Carver High School, transforming the program into a nationally recognized competitor. Under his leadership, Carver became the first Montgomery public school to compete at the National High School Cheerleading Championship, earning a #5 national ranking and winning the 2023 UCA Magic City Regional Championship.
Cliff is USASF, AHSAA, and UCA certified, with expertise in choreography, stunt development, athlete motivation, injury prevention, and program building. He holds a B.S. in Psychology and an M.S. in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Alabama State University, enhancing his holistic approach to athlete development.
Dedicated, innovative, and deeply passionate about cheer, Cliff is committed to developing strong, skilled, confident athletes and advancing the excellence of every program he leads.
