Roderick "RJ" Williams

Assistant coach Roderick “RJ” Williams joined the Alabama State women’s basketball coaching staff prior to the 2026-27 season under head women’s basketball coach Johnetta Hayes.

Williams was recently an assistant coach and player development coordinator for the Montgomery Catholic High School girls’ basketball team, a role he held for the 2025-26 season. In his lone season, Williams led all operations, including scouting reports, practice plans and workouts, while managing schedules and statistics throughout the season. He assisted in developing the program’s all-time leading scorer while helping the team to an Area 5 Regular Season and Tournament Championship.

Williams’ first taste of the college ranks came at Randolph College, where he spent a season as the Director of Men’s Basketball Operations in 2024. He was a member of head coach Evan Kee’s first staff in 2024-25, playing a role on a team that boasted a 6-3 out-of-conference record in the midst of a rebuilding campaign in Lynchburg, Va. He played a part in some of the most offensively powered teams in Randolph history, as his team set high-water marks in points per game (81.1) and made three-pointers in a season (218) while also matching the bar for steals per game (7.4)

Prior to his time at Randolph, Williams was the assistant varsity boys’ basketball coach at Park Crossing High School in Montgomery and also served as the head freshman boys’ basketball coach. During his time at Park Crossing, Williams led teams to three area championships, three sub-regional titles, and a pair of regional championships.

He first jumped into coaching as an assistant coach at Sidney Lanier High School, where he spent the 2018-19 season designing and implementing defensive strategies while managing operations for the boys’ basketball team.

Williams returns to Alabama State University after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education with a Coaching concentration in 2022. He earned a Master’s degree in Coaching and Sports Leadership from Randolph College in 2025.
