Birmingham – The Alabama State University Lady Hornets battled the University of Alabama-Birmingham evenly for the entire game but couldn't pull out the win Monday night, losing 51-47 in the second round of the UAB invitational.
“Although we lost, I feel as though the ladies did a great job,” said head coach Freda Freeman-Jackson. “They played with a clear head and they pretty much executed the things that we wanted them to do defensively. We had a few missed assignments at times, but I think they put forth a great effort. They played hard and it really showed.”
ASU held a six-point advantage midway through the second period, but the Lady Hornets could not hang on for the win.
Erica Lumpkin led the Lady Hornets (5-12) with 14 points and six rebounds, including two key three-pointers that gave Alabama State the lead in the second half. Several costly ASU turnovers and some clutch free-throw shooting by UAB denied the Lady Hornets the win.
L'Teisha Holloway and Tandria Milton each had eight points for Alabama State while Shanice Merritt had six points, six rebounds and two blocks.
For UAB, Amanda Peterson led three players in double figures with 13 points. Tamike Dukes added 12 points and 14 rebounds.
Alabama State moves on to face Louisiana-Lafayette in the consolation contest of the UAB Invitational. ULL lost 68-58 on Monday to Georgia State.
