A fight to the finish -- Alabama State 71, Arkansas Pine Bluff 68

The Lady Hornets Discussing Plays In the Huddle

Pine Bluff, Ark. — The Alabama State Lady Hornets kept their win streak alive at five games with a 71-68 victory over Arkansas Pine-Bluff Saturday night at the H.O. Clemmons Arena.

The Lady Hornets are 6-8overall and 3-0 in Southwest Athletic Conference play. UAPB dropped to 2-11 overall and 1-1 in the SWAC.

“This was an outstanding win for us tonight,” said assistant coach Clayton Harris.  “The second half we came out flat and this gave UAPB momentum that changed the twist of the game. They outscored us by five or six points, but our old faithful defense stepped in and pulled it thru for us.

Both teams shot for fewer than 45 percent from the field. Alabama State was 25 of 62 (40 percent) and the UAPB was 20-46 (43 percent).

With 12:56 left in the first half, the Lady Lions took the lead and held it until the two-minute mark when ASU's Jakayla Hill hit two free throws to knot the score at 28-28. The Lady Hornets then reeled off six unanswered points to go into the half with a 34-28 lead.

The Lady Hornets stayed on top until the 12:23 mark of the second half when UPAB's Arica Green hit a three pointer that tied the game 40-40. ASU bounced back the next 3:30, extending its advantage to 51-44 before UPAB rallied to tie the game for the third time in the second half, 54-54.

Three more times in the next six minutes the two teams pulled even, the last time at 63-63 with 2:26 to play.

The Lady Hornets were led by Erica Lumpkin with 18 points and six rebounds. L'Teisha Holloway had 13 points and seven rebounds and freshman Jasmine Quinn added 12 points and six rebounds.

Jasmine Quinn has a lot of athleticism, and with the aggressive teams that we have been playing we need a Jasmine Quinn right about now,” said head coach Freda Freeman Jackson. “I expect to play Jasmine a lot more the rest of the season.”

The Lady Lions were led by Arica Green with 21 points and Shay Holmes with 17. La Quisha Slaton added a double-double with 10 rebounds and 17 points.

ASU travels to Itta Bena, Miss., to face Mississippi Valley State Monday night at the R. W. Harrison HPER complex.
