ASU Meets Southern in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. – The Alabama State University football team heads to Mobile's Ladd-Peebles Stadium for Saturday's gridiron clash with Southern University at 2:30 p.m.

The game marks the 36th consecutive season that the Hornets (4-5, 1-5 SWAC) have played a Gulf Coast contest. This marks the 13th time overall and third year in a row for Southern (5-3, 2-2 SWAC) to be the opponent.

Bama State enters Saturday's matchup looking to rebound from a pair of hard-fought losses to Alabama A&M and Jackson State. The Jaguars come into the contest following a bye week and hope to build on their 24-10 victory Oct. 31 at Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Saturday's tilt will be the 33rd all-time meeting between ASU-SU with the Jaguars owning a 22-9 advantage in the series. Southern has won the last three matchups, including a 15-0 victory last season. ASU's last win over SU came in 2005, 45-35.

The Hornets own a 10-24-1 record in Mobile games and are looking to snap a 12-game losing skid on the coast. ASU's 35-28 win over Clark-Atlanta University in 1996 was the squad's last victory at Ladd-Peebles.

The game pits the one of the SWAC's toughest defenses against the league's leading offense. Alabama State ranks second in the conference for points allowed at 18.9, while Southern is averaging 32.9 points a game to top the league. In addition, the SWAC's top two receivers will be showcased in Southern's Juamorris Stewart (99.9 ypg, 9 TD) and Bama State's Nick Andrews (80.9 ypg, 5 TD).

WVAS (90.7 FM) will carry the game live.

ASU closes the 2009 season Nov. 26 with the annual Turkey Day Classic versus Tuskegee at Cramton Bowl.
