SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Alabama State women's basketball team fell 74-66 to Syracuse at Manley Field House in Syracuse, N.Y., Thursday night. Missed shots for the Lady Hornets cost them their chances, giving Syracuse the win.
Bama State tied the first half of the game eight times, keeping the Orange within arm's length ending the half tied at 35 apiece. The Lady Hornets shot 11-of-35 for 34.4 percent and remained consistent through the second half shooting 9-of-26 to finish the game with 34.5 percent.
Tandria Milton led Alabama State in the game with 12 points, seven rebounds and two assists. Junior forward Tanika Jackson tallied 11 points and six rebounds.
The aggressive play of Syracuse shut down key players Shanice Merritt and Nikel White. Merritt scored five points and pulled down four rebounds. White played for 13 minutes and only scored three points for the Lady Hornets. Senior Briana Thomas did manage to score eight points and grab seven rebounds.
With titter-tot play amongst both teams, this could have been either teams win. With the final tie taking place at the 17:41 mark of the second half, the Lady Hornets took their final lead with two free-throws by Jackson. With 5:19 left in the half, the Orange took its largest lead of 11.
The Lady Hornets cut the lead to within four at the 1:36 mark with a shot by Tandria Milton around the arc. Fouls and missed shots began to be the Lady Hornets dismay as Syracuse sealed the game with two free-throws for the win.
The Lady Hornets will return to action on Wednesday as they travel to Athens, Ga., to take on the Lady Bulldogs of Georgia. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m. EST from Stegeman Coliseum.
