FINAL STATS

ATLANTA -- The Lady Hornet volleyball team defeated the Clark Atlanta Panthers (9-15) in three games (25-14, 28-26, 25-20) Monday night at Epps Gymnasium.  The Lady Hornets improve to 8-13 on the season, thanks to players with double-digit kill totals.  Brena Wheeler had a team high 14 kills while hitting .440 for the match to lead Bama State.  Asia Manning had 13 kills and Althea Russell had 10 to also pace the Lady Horntes.

Bama State jumped out to a 21-13 lead in set one before Clark-Atlanta called its first time out of the match.  Included in the 21-13 lead was a 6-0 Alabama State run keyed by three back-to-back kills by Manning.  State's lead grew to 24-14 it's largest of the match.  Bama State took advantage of its first game point to win the match 25-14.

The second game saw Clark-Atlanta claw back and make it a see-saw battle.  The Panthers and Lady Hornets exchanged points with each team taking a lead no larger than two points.  State had a 7-5 lead before Tyneisha Spears registered back-to-back aces to draw Clark even.  Clark Atlanta knotted the game at 23-23 before ASU called its first time out.  Coming out of the time out, ASU had ample opportunity to close out the game, several points later, Bama State won its first game point to win a hard fought game 28-26.

Game three resembled much of game two more than the first game.  Both teams knotted the game six times before Alabama State awakened for four straight points.  In the end it was a Tylisa Hendrix kill over the Clark Atlanta block that proved to be the match-winning point.  Hendrix's finished the match with 12 kills for a .500 hitting percentage and four digs.

Ana Pego dished out 48 assists for the Lady Hornets while Roselande Corneille had 16 digs to lead the team.  Corneille ended the match with two service aces and one assist.  All in all, it was a match that sets the Lady Hornets up well for an eastern divisional match up with Alcorn State Wednesday at Lockhart Gymnasium.

"I think there were moments of good play and things we can improve on," Lady Hornet's head coach Sonia Price said.  "Our goal is to get significantly better before playing Alcorn Thursday."

Alabama State will face Alcorn State at 7 p.m. Thursday.
