FINAL STATS
ALBANY, Ga. -- The Alabama State volleyball team fell to the Albany State Rams Tuesday afternoon the Lady Hornets were defeated 3-1, (25-18, 22-25, 16-25, 22-25), at HPER Gym.
“Albany was a good team,” said Alabama State Head Coach Sonia Price following the match. “But it was really us beating us. A lot of our errors came at crucial points.”
The climax of the match came in game four as the Lady Hornets fought hard to keep the Rams from taking the match. The lead in the game continued to seesaw between the two teams. Things started to spiral downhill for Alabama State when a 22-22 tie was broken by Albany. The Lady Hornets continued to fight hard, but the Rams took the game (25-22)and the match.
“Mental inconsistencies are probably one of our weaknesses and one of the reasons for our errors,” said Price.
The Rams were led throughout the game by Sabrina Garcia and Jillian Anderson who tallied 12 kills apiece for the match. Also making contributions for the Rams' total of 42 kills was Ariana McCurty (9 kills).
Leading the Lady Hornets was Senior Althea Russell, who contributed 13 kills (.348) to the Lady Hornets' final total of 49 kills. Also senior Brena Wheeler (11kills) and junior Asia Manning (11 kills) combined to contribute 22 kills for the match.
The Lady Hornets pulled down game one with 14 total kills (.250) 25-18. To have the Rams snatch the second game from them 25-22. Game three was a tense battle for the Lady Hornets and the Rams alike as both teams went back and forth trying to gain the upper hand in the match. The Rams went on to win set three 25-16, granting them the match lead (2-1).
“We have got to play more aggressively and reduce the unforced errors before our next match,” said Price.
The Lady Hornets return to action Thursday when it faces the Alabama A&M Bulldogs in Huntsville, Ala.
